* * * *

Gabriel had been watching Jacob for several hours, but from all appearances, he was recovering. He sat up now, much more alert. Jacob took another drink from the water bottle and met Gabriel’s gaze. The sparkle had returned to his eyes. Thank God. It looks like I got the dosage right.

Before Gabriel could do anything further, Mark appeared at the door. “Let’s go. We’re leaving.”

Gabriel worked to convince Mark it would be a bad idea to go. “Jacob needs to recover.”

“Jake’s okay. Aren’t you, son?”

Jacob’s voice shook. “Sure, Dad. I’m ready.”

“Atta boy.” He looked at Gabriel and ran his tongue over his lips. “Load our shit. You’re driving.”

Damn it! At least there’s a chance for him to find us here when Rick’s search is focused on a cabin.

“You know, Mark, this is a good spot. Hard to find.”

Brittle laughter came from Mark. “You found us. Can’t chance another cop doing the same. We’re moving.” He waved his gun at Gabriel. “Get the shit in the SUV. Now!”

“Okay, okay. But where are you going next?”

“Elk Mountain. A buddy stumbled across a mine opening that’s almost impossible to find. Then I’ll figure out how to move Jake and I somewhere safe”—he studied Gabriel—“and what to do with you.”

Mark helped Jacob out the door, heading away from the cabin and toward the SUV. He noticed the gun belt where he’d disarmed Gabriel. Mark scowled, picked up the belt and tossed it down the mountainside. He turned back but held his pistol on Gabriel while he gathered the camping equipment. Gabriel walked slowly, trying to come up with—something.

Jacob made an odd squeaking noise, and Gabriel remembered the symbol for ‘blond mouse’ on Jacob’s football. Gabriel smiled. The pictograms. Of course!

Gabriel stopped to adjust his boot and snagged a small but sharp piece of fractured rock and palmed it until he’d made it inside the cabin. He glanced back and realized Mark was talking with Jacob and, for the first time, wasn’t watching him. Gabriel dropped to the floor, so if Mark checked on him, it would appear he was gathering their gear. With that, Gabriel focused on his plan and scratched two symbols into the log wall. He had completed the second pictogram when Mark yelled toward the cabin. “What’s taking so long? Get moving.”

Gabriel collected the last of their stuff then stowed it away in the back of the SUV. As he did, he noticed Jacob focused on loading rocks into the vehicle, but Gabriel made certain he didn’t call attention to whatever Jacob was doing. He brushed the dust from his hands and turned to Mark. “It’s all loaded.”

Mark motioned with the gun. “Get in. You’re driving.”

“I’ll ride up front with Gabe,” said Jacob.

He called Jacob to him, but Mark glared. Gabriel dropped his hands to his sides. “You’re welcome to ride shotgun with me.”

Gabriel eased into the driver’s side, searching for anything else he could do to leave more clues for Rick. He hoped he’d done enough. He was startled out of his thoughts when Mark scolded Jacob.
